Compasses — Types and Features

Following a bearing on the ground. Hold the compass level in front of you. The direction-of-travel arrow on the baseplate now points toward your destination. Walk in that direction, sighting on a visible feature ahead (a rock, a tree, a hilltop) and walking to it. Repeat.

This skill is most critical in poor visibility — when fog, cloud, rain, or darkness remove the visual landmarks that make navigation by sight possible. In clear conditions, you can often navigate by terrain features alone. In poor visibility, a compass bearing is your lifeline.

GPS Devices
