The Hive
The hive is the structure that houses the colony. Different hive designs suit different beekeeping styles, climates, and preferences. The choice of hive type is the first significant decision a new beekeeper makes — and it affects everything that follows, because frames, foundation, components, and accessories are generally not interchangeable between hive types.
Langstroth Hives
The most widely used hive design in the world, invented in the mid-nineteenth century. A vertical stack of modular boxes (brood boxes and supers) containing removable frames on which the bees build comb. The design uses the principle of "bee space" — a gap of approximately 8 mm (5/16 in) that bees will not fill with comb or propolis, allowing frames to be removed individually for inspection.
Strengths: Global standard — the widest range of compatible equipment, frames, foundation, and accessories. Modular (add or remove boxes as the colony grows and shrinks). Familiar to most beekeepers — easy to find advice, courses, and mentors who work with Langstroth equipment.

National Hives

WBC Hives
The picturesque, double-walled hive designed by William Broughton Carr — the traditional "beehive" shape with a tiered, pagoda-like outer housing containing an inner working hive. The outer walls provide insulation; the inner boxes hold the frames.
Strengths: Beautiful and iconic — the hive that appears on honey jars and in children's books. The double-wall construction provides insulation against temperature extremes.
Limitations: More expensive and complex than single-walled hives. Heavier. The outer walls must be removed before the inner boxes can be accessed for inspection, adding time and handling to every visit.

Top-Bar Hives
A horizontal hive — a long, trough-shaped box with bars laid across the top, from which the bees build comb downward. No frames, no foundation — the bees build natural comb in the shape and size they choose.
Strengths: Simple construction (can be built from plans). No heavy lifting (the hive is horizontal, so individual bars are lighter than full frames in a vertical hive). The bees build natural comb without foundation, which some beekeepers prefer for philosophical and practical reasons.
Limitations: Lower honey yields than framed hives (the comb is fragile and cannot be extracted in a centrifugal extractor — honey is harvested by the crush-and-strain method). Less widely used — fewer compatible accessories, less standardised equipment, and fewer experienced mentors working with this design. Warré Hives
A vertical hive designed for minimal intervention — boxes are added to the bottom of the stack (rather than the top, as in a Langstroth) to mimic the bees' natural habit of building comb downward. Uses top bars rather than full frames. The philosophy is to interfere with the colony as little as possible.

Choosing a Hive Type
For most beginners, the answer is the standard hive used in your area. If your local association teaches on Langstroth hives, start with Langstroth. If they teach on National hives, start with National. The practical advantages of using the same equipment as the experienced beekeepers around you — compatible components, shared knowledge, the ability to borrow or exchange frames — outweigh any theoretical advantages of an alternative design.
Hive Components
A complete hive (using a Langstroth or National as the example) consists of several stacked components:
Brood Box
The lower box where the queen lives and lays eggs. This is the colony's home — the nursery, the living quarters, and the food store for the brood (developing bees). The brood box contains frames on which the bees build comb for egg-laying, pollen storage, and honey stores for the colony's own use.
Supers (Honey Boxes)
Shallower boxes placed above the brood box in which the bees store surplus honey — the honey the beekeeper harvests. Supers are smaller (and lighter when full) than brood boxes, making them easier to handle.
Frames and Foundation
Frames are rectangular wooden or plastic structures that hang inside the boxes. Foundation — a thin sheet of beeswax or plastic pressed with a hexagonal pattern — is fitted inside the frame, giving the bees a template on which to build their comb. Bees draw out the foundation into full comb, filling the cells with brood, pollen, or honey.
Wax foundation is traditional and generally well-accepted by bees. Plastic foundation is more durable but may be accepted less readily by some colonies. Foundationless frames (frames with only a starter strip of wax or a guide bar) allow the bees to build entirely natural comb — preferred by some natural beekeeping practitioners.
Floor (Bottom Board)
The base of the hive. Open mesh floors (screened bottom boards) are now standard in many areas — they improve ventilation, allow varroa mites to fall through and be counted (for monitoring), and reduce moisture buildup.
Crown Board and Roof
The crown board (inner cover) sits on top of the uppermost box, providing an air gap beneath the roof. The roof (outer cover) protects the hive from rain, wind, and sun. A good roof is weatherproof, heavy enough to resist wind (or secured with a strap or weight), and ventilated to prevent condensation.
Queen Excluder
A grid placed between the brood box and the supers with gaps precisely sized to allow worker bees through but prevent the larger queen from entering the supers. This keeps the queen's egg-laying confined to the brood box, ensuring the honey in the supers is free of brood — clean and harvestable.
Protective Clothing
Bees sting. They sting to defend their colony, and they will sting a beekeeper who opens the hive, particularly if the bees are agitated, the weather is poor, or the inspection is clumsy. Protective clothing does not make you invulnerable — a determined bee can sting through thin fabric — but it reduces the number and severity of stings significantly and, crucially, gives the beekeeper confidence to work calmly. Calm beekeeping produces calm bees.
Full Bee Suits
A one-piece coverall with an integrated or attached veil, covering the entire body from head to ankle. The standard recommendation for beginners.
What to look for: A veil that provides clear visibility and keeps well away from the face (round or fencing-style veils are preferred over flat veils that can press against the skin). Elastic or Velcro closures at wrists and ankles to seal against bee entry. Ventilated suits (with mesh layers) are significantly more comfortable in warm weather — beekeeping inspections in summer inside a non-ventilated white suit are hot work. Pockets for hive tools and notebooks. Zips that seal fully without gaps.
Jackets and Veils
A jacket with attached veil covers the upper body and head — lighter and cooler than a full suit. Worn with sturdy trousers tucked into boots. Many experienced beekeepers prefer a jacket over a full suit for routine inspections, reserving the full suit for more challenging colony work.
Gloves
Leather or goatskin gloves with long canvas or cotton gauntlets that extend to the elbow. Gloves protect the hands from stings and propolis (the sticky resin bees use to seal gaps in the hive, which bonds to bare skin and clothing with remarkable tenacity).
The trade-off: Thick gloves reduce sensitivity. Experienced beekeepers often work with thin nitrile gloves or bare hands for finer manipulation — but beginners should use proper beekeeping gloves until they are comfortable and confident around the colony.
Footwear
Wellington boots or sturdy boots that the suit legs or trouser cuffs can be tucked into, creating a sealed barrier at the ankle. Bees crawl upward — an exposed ankle is an invitation.
Essential Tools
Smoker
A metal canister with bellows that burns fuel (dried leaves, pine needles, burlap, cardboard, or commercial smoker fuel) to produce cool, white smoke. Smoke calms the bees by masking their alarm pheromones and triggering a feeding response — bees with full stomachs are less inclined to sting.
What to look for: Stainless steel construction (durability). A heat shield around the canister (prevents burns). Bellows that produce a consistent, controlled puff. A size appropriate to your use — larger smokers stay lit longer, which matters during extended inspections.
The most important skill: Learning to light the smoker and keep it lit throughout an inspection. A smoker that goes out halfway through is the single most common beginner frustration. Practice before your first hive inspection — not during it.
Hive Tool
A flat, angled steel tool used to pry frames apart (bees glue everything together with propolis), lever frames out of the box, scrape excess comb and propolis from surfaces, and lift the crown board. The hive tool is the beekeeper's constant companion — it goes into the hive with you on every visit.
Types: The standard flat hive tool (a flat blade at one end, a right-angle scraper at the other). The J-type hive tool (with a hooked end that slides under the frame lug for easier lifting). Many beekeepers own both and use whichever suits the task.
Bee Brush
A soft-bristled brush used to gently sweep bees off frames during inspection or honey harvesting. The bristles must be soft enough to move bees without injuring them.
Feeding Equipment
Bees need feeding when their own stores are insufficient — typically in early spring (before the first nectar flow), in autumn (to build up stores for winter), or during prolonged periods of poor weather when foraging is impossible.
Contact feeders (inverted containers placed over the crown board hole) and rapid feeders (tray-style feeders that sit on top of the hive) deliver sugar syrup to the colony. Fondant (a solid sugar paste) is used for winter feeding when liquid syrup is inappropriate.
Honey Harvesting Equipment
Do not harvest honey in the first season. The colony needs its first season's stores to survive the winter. Harvesting too early risks starving the colony. Most experienced beekeepers advise leaving all the honey for the bees in their first season and beginning to harvest (modestly) from the second season onward.
When the time comes, the basic harvesting process is: remove the capped honey frames from the supers, uncap the cells, extract the honey, strain it, and bottle it.
Uncapping Tools
A heated uncapping knife, a cold uncapping knife, or an uncapping fork (a pronged tool that scratches the wax cappings from the comb surface). The cappings must be removed before the honey can be extracted.
Honey Extractors
A centrifugal drum that spins the uncapped frames, flinging the honey out of the comb by centrifugal force while leaving the comb intact (so it can be returned to the bees to refill). Available in manual (hand-crank) and electric versions.
For beginners and small-scale beekeepers: A manual hand-crank extractor is adequate and significantly cheaper than electric. Many local beekeeping associations own a shared extractor that members can borrow — check before buying your own.
The crush-and-strain method (crushing the comb in a container and straining the honey through mesh) is the simplest alternative — no extractor needed, though it destroys the comb (which means the bees must rebuild it, using energy and honey that could otherwise go into the next crop).
Straining and Settling
Extracted honey is strained through a fine mesh sieve or cloth to remove wax particles, propolis fragments, and other debris. It is then left to settle in a food-grade bucket (with a honey gate or tap at the base) for twenty-four to forty-eight hours, allowing air bubbles to rise before bottling.
Jars and Bottling
Glass honey jars with tamper-evident lids are the standard for presenting and selling honey. Labels should include the jar weight, the producer's details, and (if selling) the batch number — check your local food labelling regulations before selling honey.
Health and Treatment
Honeybee colonies face health challenges — varroa mites (a parasitic mite present in virtually all managed colonies worldwide), nosema (a gut pathogen), European and American foulbrood (serious bacterial diseases), and other pests and diseases.
Varroa monitoring and treatment is an ongoing responsibility for all beekeepers. Various treatment methods exist — organic acids (oxalic acid, formic acid), thymol-based treatments, and integrated pest management techniques. Your local association and mentor will advise on the treatments and timing appropriate for your area.
Disease recognition is a core beekeeping skill. Learning to identify the signs of foulbrood, nosema, and other conditions during routine inspections protects your colony and the colonies of beekeepers around you. Statutory disease inspections may be carried out by government inspectors in some regions — cooperate fully if this applies to you.
Hive Stands
A hive should sit off the ground — raised on a stand, blocks, or a purpose-built frame — to improve ventilation beneath the floor, reduce damp, deter some ground-dwelling predators, and bring the hive entrance to a comfortable working height. A stand that raises the hive 30–45 cm (12–18 in) off the ground is ideal.
Getting Your Bees
Bees are typically acquired as a nucleus colony (a "nuc") — a small, established colony with a laying queen, worker bees, brood in various stages, and stores, on four to six frames. A nuc is transferred into your prepared hive and allowed to grow.
Buy locally wherever possible. Local bees are adapted to your climate and forage conditions. Your local association can usually connect you with reputable nuc suppliers or members with colonies to sell.
Swarm collection — catching a swarm of bees that has left another colony — is free and provides local, vigorous bees, but requires experience and confidence. Most associations have a swarm collection list; as a beginner, joining a swarm collection with an experienced beekeeper is an excellent learning experience.
The First Season: What to Expect
Your first season is about learning, not harvesting. You will inspect the colony regularly (every seven to ten days during the active season), learn to read the frames (recognising brood patterns, queen cells, stores levels, and signs of health or disease), manage the colony's growth, and — with luck and good management — bring the colony through to autumn with sufficient stores to survive the winter.
Do not expect honey in the first season. The colony is building up — drawing comb, raising brood, and establishing itself. Harvesting honey from a first-season colony risks leaving them without enough stores for winter.
Do expect stings. Even with good protective clothing and a well-lit smoker, you will be stung occasionally. For most people, a bee sting is painful but brief — a sharp sting followed by localised swelling that subsides within a day or two. A small minority of people develop serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). If you have any history of severe allergic reaction to insect stings, consult a medical professional before beginning beekeeping.
Common Mistakes New Beekeepers Make
Starting Without a Course or Mentor
The single most valuable investment is not a hive — it is a local beginner's course and a relationship with an experienced beekeeper who will answer your questions, watch you inspect, and tell you honestly when you are about to make a mistake.
Buying Too Much Equipment Too Soon
Start with one hive, the basic tools, and protective clothing. Do not buy an extractor, a wax melter, and fifty jars before your first colony has even arrived. Add equipment as your experience and colony numbers grow.
Harvesting Honey in the First Season
Leave the honey for the bees. A colony that enters winter with inadequate stores will die. Your reward in the first season is knowledge and confidence, not jars of honey.
Neglecting Varroa Management
Varroa mites weaken and kill colonies. Monitoring mite levels and treating when necessary is not optional — it is a fundamental responsibility of every beekeeper. Your local association will advise on methods and timing.
Not Inspecting Regularly
A colony that is not inspected during the active season can swarm (losing half the colony and the queen), develop disease, or run out of space — all problems that regular inspection prevents or catches early.
Choosing a Hive Type That Nobody Nearby Uses
If every beekeeper in your area uses National hives, starting with a Langstroth means you cannot borrow or exchange frames, cannot easily get local advice, and will need to source all components from specialist or distant suppliers. Use the local standard.
