Preformed (Rigid) Ponds

Pond Liners: Materials Compared
The liner is the most critical component of any flexible-liner pond. It must be waterproof, durable, UV-resistant, fish-safe, and flexible enough to conform to the contours of your excavation. A liner failure means a drained pond — and replacing a liner under an established pond is a major, disruptive project. Choose well the first time.
EPDM Rubber
Ethylene propylene diene monomer — a synthetic rubber. The industry standard for garden ponds and the material used in the majority of professional installations.
Strengths: Extremely flexible — conforms to irregular shapes, shelves, and contours without cracking or tearing. Stretches to accommodate minor ground settlement. UV-resistant. Calculating Liner Size

The overlap is essential — it provides the margin that is tucked under the edging to hold the liner in place and prevent it from slipping into the water. Cutting the liner too small is an expensive mistake. Always round up.
Depth, Shape and Shelves

A swimming pond needs a swimming zone of at least 2 m (6.5 ft) depth and a regeneration zone of 20–60 cm (8–24 in) for planting.
Marginal shelves — flat ledges around the pond's inner perimeter at 20–30 cm depth — hold pots of marginal plants (iris, marsh marigold, water mint) that soften the pond edge and provide habitat.
Shape: Informal, naturalistic shapes suit wildlife and cottage-style gardens. Formal geometric shapes (rectangular, circular) suit contemporary and traditional designed gardens. The shape is entirely your choice — a flexible liner accommodates anything.
Pumps: Moving the Water
A pump is the engine of an active pond — it drives water through filters, up to waterfalls, and through fountain heads. Wildlife ponds do not necessarily need a pump (still water is natural). Ornamental ponds with fish, fountains, or waterfalls do.
Submersible Pumps
Sit inside the pond, fully underwater. The most common type for domestic ponds.
Strengths: Easy to install (just place in the pond and connect). No external plumbing or housing needed. Quiet. Available in a wide range of flow rates.

UV Clarifiers

Effective and widely used in ornamental ponds where clear water is the priority. Not necessary for wildlife ponds (green water is natural and supports the food chain) or for natural swimming ponds (where the regeneration zone handles clarity biologically).
Do You Need a Filter?
Wildlife pond without fish: No filter needed. The pond's own ecology — plants, bacteria, invertebrates — maintains balance naturally. Some algae and murkiness are normal and healthy.
Ornamental pond with fish: Yes. Fish produce waste that must be processed. A pump, biological filter, and (optionally) a UV clarifier maintain water quality and clarity.
Natural swimming pond: Biological filtration is integral to the design — the regeneration zone and its associated planting and gravel beds are the filter. Additional mechanical skimmers remove surface debris.
Fountains, Waterfalls and Moving Water
Pond Fountains
A pump drives water upward through a fountain head, creating a spray, jet, or pattern that falls back into the pond. Fountains add visual interest, sound, and aeration (the splashing water introduces oxygen).
What to look for: Interchangeable fountain heads (different spray patterns — bell, tiered, geyser). An adjustable flow valve to control the spray height. A flow rate matched to the pond size — a fountain that empties the pond faster than it refills creates pump problems.
A wildlife consideration: Fountains in wildlife ponds are not necessary and can disturb surface-dwelling insects and amphibians. Still water is natural habitat. Waterfalls and Streams
Water pumped from the pond to an elevated point, from which it cascades back down over rocks, ledges, or a constructed streambed into the pond.
The appeal: The sound of falling water is one of the most soothing sounds in a garden. A well-constructed waterfall adds visual drama, movement, and aeration. A stream connecting an upper feature to the pond below creates a naturalistic water course.
Construction: A waterfall requires a separate liner (overlapping the main pond liner by at least 30 cm / 12 in to prevent leakage), rocks or ledges to shape the water flow, and a pump powerful enough to deliver water to the top at adequate flow. The width of the waterfall determines the flow rate needed — a narrow trickle needs much less flow than a wide curtain.
The common mistake: Underestimating the pump size for a waterfall. The pump must lift water to the top of the fall and still deliver enough flow to create a satisfying visual effect. Check the pump's performance at the head height you need, not just its maximum rated flow (which is measured with no head height).
Spitters and Spouters
Decorative figures, animal heads, or ornamental vessels mounted at the pond edge that spout a stream of water into the pond. Driven by a small submersible pump connected to the spitter via concealed tubing.

Liner exposed to UV degrades. Edging — stone, turf, planting, or timber — must cover all liner above the waterline both for protection and appearance.
Undersized Pump for the Waterfall
A waterfall needs substantial flow to look and sound good. Check the pump's performance at your specific head height, not just its maximum rating.
Adding Fish to a Wildlife Pond
Fish transform the ecosystem. If wildlife is the priority, do not add fish. If fish are the priority, provide adequate filtration and accept that wildlife diversity will be reduced.
