What Fleece Does

Keep a roll of 50 gsm for emergencies — severe frost warnings, protecting a particular treasure, or wrapping container plants in exposed positions.
How to Use Fleece
Draped directly over plants: The simplest method. Lay the fleece over the plants, allowing enough slack for growth, and secure the edges with pegs, stones, soil, or boards. This works well for low-growing crops and seedlings. The fleece can rest directly on foliage for short periods, but prolonged contact can wick frost onto leaves — an air gap, created by simple hoops or supports, is better for longer-term use.

Ultra-Fine Mesh (0.3–0.6 mm)

Using Insect Mesh Effectively
Cover immediately after planting or sowing. The mesh must be in place before the pest arrives. Covering carrots after the carrot fly has already laid eggs achieves nothing — the larvae are already in the soil.
Seal the edges completely. Bury the edges in soil, weigh them down with boards, or use ground pegs to create a continuous barrier. A gap at the edge is an open door. Ground-dwelling pests like carrot fly are low fliers — they find gaps at ground level with ease.
Allow slack for growth. The mesh needs room for the plants to expand beneath it. Too tight and the plants push against the mesh, creating contact points where insects can lay eggs through the fabric.
Remove for pollination if necessary. Crops that require pollination by bees and other insects (strawberries, courgettes, runner beans) must have the mesh removed or lifted during flowering. Bird Netting
Bird netting is the traditional solution for protecting soft fruit (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, currants, cherries) from birds. Butterfly Netting
Butterfly netting has a mesh aperture of approximately 7 mm — too small for butterflies to pass through, but large enough for good airflow and light. It is designed specifically to prevent cabbage white butterflies from laying eggs on brassica crops (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts), which in turn prevents caterpillar damage.
