Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
At a minimum, when handling and applying any garden chemical:
Chemical-resistant gloves — not ordinary gardening gloves, which absorb chemicals through the fabric. Nitrile or PVC chemical-resistant gloves that prevent skin contact with the product.

Mixing and Measuring: Accuracy Is Not Optional
The product label specifies a dilution rate — a precise volume of product per volume of water. This is not approximate. Measure it.
Use a measuring jug or graduated cylinder dedicated to chemical mixing (never one used for food or drink). Measure the concentrate accurately. Add it to the specified volume of water. Do not estimate, guess, or pour by eye.

Requirements vary by jurisdiction, but the principle is consistent: people have a right to know that a surface they are walking on, or their dog is walking on, has been treated with a chemical.
On allotments and shared growing spaces, your neighbours have a legitimate interest in what you spray, because drift does not respect plot boundaries. Chemical applied to your plot can travel to the organic grower next door.
Near watercourses, drainage ditches, and public water supplies, spraying may be subject to specific regulations and buffer zones. Check your local environmental authority's guidelines before spraying anywhere near water.
Dedicated Equipment: Never Mix Your Sprayers
This is one of the most important and most frequently ignored rules of sprayer use.
A sprayer used for herbicide must never be used to apply anything else. Herbicide residue left inside a sprayer — no matter how thoroughly you believe you have cleaned it — can persist in sufficient quantity to damage or kill plants that you subsequently spray with what you think is pure water, fertiliser, or fungicide.
The standard professional practice is to own and clearly label separate sprayers:
One sprayer for herbicide (weedkiller) — labelled and used for herbicide only. One sprayer for everything else (fertiliser, fungicide, foliar feeds, water).
If you use chemical pesticides, a third dedicated sprayer may be appropriate.
Label your sprayers clearly and permanently. A strip of coloured tape or a permanent marker label — "HERBICIDE ONLY" — prevents the accidental cross-contamination that kills plants you were trying to feed.
Cleaning: The Step That Prevents Disasters
After every use — every single use — the sprayer must be thoroughly cleaned.
The cleaning procedure:
1. Empty any remaining spray solution from the tank. Do not pour it down a drain, into a watercourse, or onto bare soil (see Disposal below).
2. Rinse the tank with clean water. Agitate the water inside the tank to loosen residue from the walls.
3. Pump the rinse water through the wand and nozzle — the hose, wand, and nozzle contain residue just as the tank does.
4. Repeat the rinse at least twice — three times for herbicide sprayers.
5. Remove and inspect the nozzle. Clean any blockage with a soft brush or nozzle cleaning tool (never use a pin or wire, which damages the nozzle orifice and changes the spray pattern).

Chemical products must be stored securely, safely, and in accordance with the product label and local regulations.
Store chemicals in their original containers with labels intact. Never decant chemicals into unlabelled containers — this creates a serious risk of accidental poisoning or misuse.
Store in a locked, secure location — inaccessible to children, pets, and unauthorised persons. A locked shed or cabinet is the minimum. Away from food, animal feed, and water sources.
Store away from extremes of temperature. Many chemicals degrade in heat, freeze in cold, or become unstable outside their recommended storage range.
Do not stockpile more than you need. Chemicals degrade over time. Buy for the current season's use and dispose of any remainder properly at the end of the season.
Disposal: What to Do With What Is Left
Never pour unused chemical or rinsate down a drain, into a watercourse, or onto bare soil. This is illegal in most jurisdictions and environmentally harmful in all of them.
Unused diluted spray: Apply to the target area at a rate below the label maximum. If this is not possible, contact your local authority for guidance on disposal of hazardous household waste.
Unused concentrated product: Contact your local authority or waste disposal service. Many areas have designated collection points or dates for hazardous household waste, including garden chemicals.
Empty containers: Triple-rinse the container (adding the rinse water to the spray tank), then dispose of the rinsed container according to local regulations. Many jurisdictions accept triple-rinsed containers in general waste; others require them to be taken to a collection point.
The principle: Every drop of chemical you purchase is your responsibility from the moment you buy it until the moment it is properly and legally disposed of. There is no acceptable shortcut.
The Ecological Perspective

We believe that the vast majority of domestic garden tasks — feeding, weed management, pest management, and disease control — can be achieved effectively and sustainably without chemical pesticides or herbicides. Healthy soil, good cultural practices, diverse planting, and tolerance for natural variation produce gardens that are productive, beautiful, and alive with wildlife.
Every chemical application has consequences beyond the target organism. Herbicides kill wildflowers that feed pollinators. Insecticides kill the insects that birds depend on. Fungicides disrupt the soil microbiology that sustains plant health.
