How the Saxophone Produces Sound
The player places the mouthpiece (with a reed attached by a ligature) into the mouth. The lower lip rests against the reed, cushioned by a slight roll over the lower teeth. The upper teeth rest directly on the top of the mouthpiece.

Body Material and Finish
All saxophones are made from brass (an alloy of copper and zinc). The differences are in the specific brass alloy, the treatment of the metal, and the finish applied.
Finishes
Gold lacquer — The most common finish. A thin layer of clear or tinted lacquer over the brass body. Produces a bright, warm tone and protects the brass from tarnishing. The standard finish for student and many professional instruments.

The Mouthpiece — The Single Most Important Upgrade
The mouthpiece is the most influential component of the saxophone's sound — more impactful than the instrument itself at the student level. The mouthpiece that comes with a student saxophone is designed for ease of response (moderately open, forgiving of embouchure variations) but is often of basic quality.
Mouthpiece Characteristics
Tip opening — The gap between the reed and the mouthpiece tip. A closer (smaller) tip opening is easier to control, responds to lighter air pressure, and is recommended for beginners. When to Upgrade

The Neck (Crook) and Its Importance
The neck (also called the crook) is the curved metal tube that connects the mouthpiece to the body. The neck carries the octave key mechanism and plays a significant role in the instrument's intonation, response, and tonal character.
