Getting the coop right is the single most important decision in poultry keeping. Before You Build or Buy — Understanding What Chickens Need
Chickens are remarkably hardy animals, but they have specific requirements that a coop must meet.
Protection from predators. Foxes, rats, badgers, mink, stoats, weasels, birds of prey, and domestic dogs and cats are all threats. A fox can dig under a fence, pull apart chicken wire, and lift a simple latch. A rat can squeeze through a gap of two centimetres. A weasel or stoat can fit through even smaller openings. The coop is the last line of defence when your birds are at their most vulnerable — asleep and unable to see.
Shelter from weather. Rain, wind, extreme cold, and extreme heat all affect chicken welfare and egg production. The coop must be waterproof, draught-free at roosting level, and provide shade in summer.
Ventilation. Chickens produce a surprising amount of moisture through respiration and droppings. Ammonia builds up from decomposing waste. A coop without adequate ventilation traps this moisture and ammonia, causing respiratory disease and frostbite (frostbite is caused by moisture, not cold alone). Ventilation is more important than insulation in the vast majority of climates.
A place to roost, a place to nest, and a place to eat and drink. These areas should be separate. Chickens roost to sleep, nest to lay, and eat and drink during their active hours. A well-designed coop separates these functions.
Sizing — How Much Space Per Bird
The general guidance for coop interior space is approximately 0.3–0.4 square metres (3–4 square feet) per standard-sized hen for the indoor sleeping area. This is the minimum — more is always better, and larger or heavier breeds (Orpingtons, Brahmas, Jersey Giants) need more space per bird.
For the outdoor run, approximately 0.7–1.0 square metres (8–10 square feet) per bird is the standard recommendation. If your birds free-range during the day and only use the coop for sleeping, the coop interior can be at the lower end of the range. If birds are confined to the coop and run for extended periods (during bad weather, predator lockdown, or disease restriction), they need the higher end or more.
Overcrowding causes problems. Feather pecking, aggression, stress, disease transmission, and reduced egg production all increase in cramped conditions. When in doubt, size up. Chickens are also — as many keepers discover — mildly addictive. Most people who start with four hens end up wanting more. Building or buying slightly larger than your initial flock requires saves you the cost and effort of upgrading later.
Wooden Coops — The Traditional Choice
Wooden coops are the most widely available and come in an enormous range of sizes, styles, and quality levels.
Advantages of wood. Natural insulation properties — wood breathes, buffering temperature extremes. Widely available in every size from a small backyard coop to a walk-in henhouse. Can be built to any specification (DIY or custom). Attractive and traditional in appearance. Easy to modify — adding ventilation, extra nesting boxes, or pop-hole adjustments is straightforward with standard tools.
Disadvantages of wood. Susceptible to rot if not properly treated and maintained. Provides harbourage for red mite — the most common external parasite in poultry. Red mites hide in cracks, joints, and rough wood grain during the day, emerging at night to feed on roosting birds. Treating a wooden coop for red mite can be an ongoing challenge. Requires regular treatment with pet-safe wood preservative. Heavier than plastic alternatives of similar size, making relocation more difficult.
Wood quality matters enormously. Tongue-and-groove construction is significantly more weatherproof and mite-resistant than simple butted planks. Thick timber (at least 12 mm, ideally thicker) provides structural integrity, insulation, and durability that thin panels cannot. Pressure-treated (tanalised) timber resists rot — ensure the treatment is pet-safe and the wood is fully dried before housing birds. Felt roofing degrades quickly; onduline or corrugated roofing sheets are more durable alternatives.
Plastic Coops — The Modern Alternative
Moulded plastic coops have become increasingly popular, and for good reason.
Advantages of plastic. Red mite has nowhere to hide — no cracks, joints, or rough grain. Cleaning is dramatically easier — a pressure washer or hose and disinfectant is all that is needed. Lightweight — plastic coops can be moved single-handedly. UV-stabilised plastic does not rot, does not require preservative treatment, and is inherently weatherproof. Longevity — a quality plastic coop will outlast most wooden coops.
Disadvantages of plastic. Higher initial cost. Fixed design — you cannot easily modify a moulded plastic coop. Limited size range — most plastic coops are designed for small flocks (typically two to twelve birds). Less natural insulation than wood — plastic is a poor insulator, meaning internal temperatures track external temperatures more closely. Fewer design options — the aesthetic is functional rather than traditional.
The red mite advantage is significant. Experienced poultry keepers will tell you that red mite is one of the most persistent, frustrating, and welfare-damaging problems in chicken keeping. A plastic coop that eliminates the mite's hiding places is a genuine quality-of-life improvement — for both the birds and the keeper.
Ventilation — The Most Misunderstood Element
New poultry keepers instinctively want to seal their coop against draughts, especially in winter. This is one of the most common and most damaging mistakes.
Chickens need airflow. A chicken exhales moisture with every breath. A flock of six hens in a closed coop produces a remarkable amount of water vapour overnight. Combined with moisture from droppings, this creates a humid environment. Humid air in cold conditions causes frostbite — it is the moisture, not the cold temperature alone, that damages combs, wattles, and toes. Ammonia from decomposing droppings accumulates in a sealed coop, irritating respiratory systems and causing chronic lung damage.
Ventilation is not the same as draughts. A draught is a direct stream of cold air hitting the birds at roosting level. Ventilation is the gentle, continuous exchange of stale, moist, ammonia-laden air from inside the coop with fresh air from outside, occurring above the birds' heads.
Best practice: Install ventilation openings high on the coop walls, near the roofline, on opposite sides of the coop to allow cross-ventilation. Cover all ventilation openings with hardware cloth (welded mesh) to prevent predator entry. The openings should be above the height of the roosting bars so that air exchange occurs over the chickens, not through them. Ridge vents along the roof peak are particularly effective.
How much ventilation? More than you think. As a rough guide, at least one square foot (approximately 900 square centimetres) of ventilation opening per bird. In hot climates, significantly more. If you can smell ammonia when you open the coop in the morning, ventilation is inadequate.
Predator-Proofing — Hardware Cloth, Not Chicken Wire
Chicken wire keeps chickens in. It does not keep predators out.
A fox can tear through standard chicken wire. A rat can squeeze through the mesh. A determined badger can force through it. Chicken wire is a containment tool for poultry — it is not a security barrier against predators.
Hardware cloth (welded wire mesh) with a maximum aperture of 12 mm (½ inch) is the standard for predator-proofing. This gauge stops rats, weasels, stoats, and even determined foxes. It should be secured with screws and washers (not just staples, which can be pulled out) to the coop frame.
Ground security. Foxes dig. A skirt of hardware cloth extending at least 30 cm (12 inches) outward from the base of the coop or run, laid flat on the ground and either buried under turf or weighted with paving slabs, prevents digging entry. Alternatively, a concrete or slab base eliminates digging entirely.
Latches and locks. Raccoons (in North America) can operate simple slide bolts and turn-button latches. Foxes and badgers can force flimsy catches. Use latches that require two actions to open (lift-and-slide, or a clip with a secondary lock) or padlocks on main doors.

Roosting Bars — Where Chickens Actually Sleep
Chickens sleep perched off the ground. This is instinctive — in the wild, jungle fowl roost in trees at night to avoid ground predators.
Roosting bar material. A standard 50 mm × 100 mm (2 × 4 inch) timber board, positioned with the wide (100 mm / 4 inch) face upward, is the ideal roosting bar. Chickens do not grip their perch tightly like songbirds. They prefer to rest flat-footed, with their body and feathers covering their feet for warmth. The wide, flat surface of a 2×4 provides this. Round dowels or narrow poles force the chicken to grip, which is less comfortable, and in cold weather, exposed toes are vulnerable to frostbite.
Spacing. Allow approximately 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) of roosting bar length per bird for standard-sized hens. Larger breeds need more. If using multiple bars in a staggered (ladder-style) arrangement, space them approximately 30–40 cm apart horizontally and vertically. The highest bar will be the most popular — chickens compete for the highest perch as part of the pecking order.
Height. Position roosting bars at least 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) above the floor. They must be higher than the nesting boxes — if the roost is lower than the nesting box, chickens will sleep in the nesting boxes, fouling them with droppings overnight.
Droppings boards. A removable board or tray positioned beneath the roosting bars catches the majority of droppings (chickens produce most of their waste overnight while roosting). A droppings board that can be scraped clean daily dramatically reduces overall coop cleaning workload and keeps bedding cleaner.
Nesting Boxes — Encouraging Clean Egg Production
Nesting boxes provide a dark, quiet, private space where hens lay their eggs.
How many? One nesting box for every three to five hens. You do not need one box per hen — hens share nesting boxes willingly, and most flocks have a "favourite" box that multiple hens queue for regardless of how many alternatives are available.
Size. Approximately 30 cm × 30 cm × 30 cm (12 × 12 × 12 inches) for standard breeds. Larger breeds may need slightly bigger boxes. Too large is better than too small — a cramped hen is an uncomfortable hen, and uncomfortable hens lay elsewhere.
Position. Lower than the roosting bars (to prevent sleeping in boxes). In a darker, quieter area of the coop. Easily accessible from outside the coop for egg collection — external access lids or doors are a significant convenience feature.
Design details. A sloped roof prevents chickens from roosting on top of the boxes (droppings on top of nesting boxes contaminate the area and add cleaning work). A small lip at the front edge retains nesting material and eggs. Line boxes with clean straw, wood shavings, or purpose-made nesting pads, changed or refreshed regularly.
Cleaning Access — The Feature You Will Value Most
A coop that is difficult to clean is a coop that does not get cleaned often enough. And a dirty coop causes disease.
What makes a coop easy to clean? Large opening doors or removable panels that give you full access to the interior. A removable or slide-out droppings tray beneath the roosting bars. A smooth interior finish (no unnecessary ledges, rough joints, or inaccessible corners). Enough height that you are not crouching awkwardly (walk-in coops are a luxury, but a legitimate one). Nesting boxes accessible from outside.
What makes a coop hard to clean? Small doors that require you to reach blindly into corners. Fixed internal fittings that trap debris. Multiple levels or compartments with restricted access. Felt roofing that absorbs moisture and harbours mites.
When evaluating any coop, imagine yourself cleaning it on a cold, wet morning. If the design makes that task easy, it is a well-designed coop. If it makes you dread the task, you will eventually skip maintenance — and your birds will suffer.
Flooring and Bedding — Deep Litter Versus Regular Cleanout
Regular cleanout involves removing all bedding every one to two weeks, replacing it with fresh material. This is straightforward but generates waste and requires regular bedding purchases.
The deep litter method is an alternative where bedding is added progressively over several months. The bottom layers begin to compost in place, generating gentle warmth (beneficial in winter) and breaking down droppings. The entire bed is removed once or twice a year and replaced. This method requires a solid floor (not bare earth, which stays damp), regular turning or stirring of the top layer to prevent compaction, and good ventilation to manage moisture. Done well, it reduces workload and produces excellent compost. Done poorly (too wet, too compacted, inadequate ventilation), it creates a damp, ammonia-rich environment.
Bedding materials. Wood shavings (dust-extracted softwood) are the most popular. Straw works but compacts more readily and provides less moisture absorption. Chopped cardboard is increasingly used as an absorbent, low-dust alternative. Hemp bedding is highly absorbent and composts well.
Runs and Outdoor Space
Even if your birds free-range during the day, a secure attached run provides a safe outdoor area when full free-ranging is not possible (during predator risk, poor weather, or when you are away from home).
Run construction follows the same principles as coop security — hardware cloth on all sides including the top (to prevent aerial predators and climbing predators), ground protection (buried apron or paved base), and secure access.
Covered runs protect birds from rain and provide shade. At minimum, cover part of the run to create a dry area where birds can exercise and dust-bathe regardless of weather.
Moveable Coops Versus Fixed Housing
Moveable coops (chicken tractors or arks) are lightweight structures that can be relocated around a garden or field. Moving the coop regularly gives birds access to fresh ground, reduces parasite buildup in soil, prevents the ground from becoming muddy and barren, and distributes manure evenly across the land. They are ideal for small flocks on grass.
Fixed coops are permanent structures — larger, heavier, and capable of housing bigger flocks. They offer more space, better insulation, and easier installation of features like electricity (for lighting and automatic doors). The ground around a fixed coop will inevitably become worn and muddy in wet weather, requiring management (bark chips, gravel, or hardstanding).
The choice depends on flock size, land available, and management style. Many keepers start with a moveable coop for a small flock and transition to fixed housing as their flock grows.
Insulation — When It Matters and When It Does Not
Chickens are remarkably cold-hardy. Their feathers provide excellent insulation, and a group of hens roosting together generates significant body heat. In the vast majority of temperate climates, insulation is not necessary provided ventilation is adequate.
Ventilation is almost always more important than insulation. A well-ventilated coop where moisture escapes keeps birds healthier in winter than a sealed, insulated coop where moisture is trapped. Frostbite comes from damp air, not cold air.
Insulation matters in extreme climates — sustained temperatures well below freezing for weeks at a time. In these conditions, insulation helps retain the heat generated by the birds themselves. Rigid foam board between internal and external cladding is effective. Ensure insulation is covered (chickens will peck at exposed foam).
The Problem with Cheap Flat-Pack Coops
Online marketplaces are flooded with inexpensive flat-pack wooden coops, often imported and assembled from thin timber. These coops look appealing in photographs and carry low price tags. Be cautious.
Common issues with budget flat-pack coops. Thin timber (6–8 mm) that warps, splits, and rots within a season. Poor joinery that allows water ingress and provides red mite harbourage. Flimsy latches and catches that do not secure against predators. Felt roofing that degrades rapidly. Inadequate ventilation (often none at all — sealed boxes). Nesting boxes and roosting bars as afterthoughts rather than properly designed features. "Suitable for six hens" claims on coops with barely enough space for three.
The honest advice: A quality coop is an investment. Spending more on a well-built coop that lasts ten years is better value than replacing a cheap coop every two years — and infinitely better for the birds that live in it.

Common Mistakes Coop Buyers Make
Buying too small. The advertised bird capacity on many coops is optimistic. A coop listed as "suitable for six hens" often provides adequate space for three to four. Check the actual internal dimensions and calculate square footage per bird yourself.
Prioritising insulation over ventilation. In almost every climate, ventilation matters more. Sealed coops cause respiratory disease and frostbite.
Using chicken wire for predator protection. Chicken wire does not stop foxes, rats, or weasels. Use hardware cloth.
Ignoring cleaning access. You will clean this coop hundreds of times. If access is awkward, you will resent every visit.
Positioning roosting bars lower than nesting boxes. Chickens roost at the highest available point. If nesting boxes are higher, chickens sleep in them — and foul them overnight.
Felt roofing on wooden coops. Roofing felt degrades rapidly and harbours red mite beneath the surface. Onduline or corrugated sheeting is more durable and hygienic.
No ground protection on runs. A fox will dig under an unsecured run in minutes. Always use a buried wire apron or solid base.
