Automatic Coop Doors — The Best Investment You Will Make
An automatic coop door opener is the single piece of equipment that most transforms the daily poultry keeping experience. It opens the pop-hole door at dawn (or a set time) and closes it at dusk (or when a light sensor detects darkness), securing the coop against predators without requiring you to be present.
Why it matters. Chickens need to be locked in the coop at night — a fox will kill an entire flock through an open pop-hole door. Without an automatic door, you must personally close the coop every evening (after the birds have gone to roost, which shifts with the seasons) and open it every morning. This is a seven-day-a-week commitment with no days off. An automatic door handles this reliably, allowing you to go out for the evening, stay away overnight, or simply sleep in on a weekend morning without worrying about your birds.

Egg Storage — From Nest Box to Kitchen
Unwashed eggs with their bloom intact can be stored at room temperature for approximately two to three weeks in most climates. Many experienced poultry keepers store eggs on the counter rather than in the fridge, relying on the intact bloom for protection.
Washed eggs have had the bloom removed and must be refrigerated. Once you wash an egg, you have removed its natural defence — treat it as you would a shop-bought egg and refrigerate.
Best practice. If eggs are clean (dry and not visibly soiled), do not wash them. If an egg is soiled, either use it promptly (washing if necessary before use), or discard if heavily contaminated. A dry cloth can remove minor surface marks without damaging the bloom.

Traps (snap traps, not glue traps — which cause prolonged suffering) and tamper-resistant bait stations are common tools. Always use bait stations designed to prevent non-target animals (including your poultry) from accessing the poison. Secure bait stations away from areas where children, pets, or wild birds can reach them.
Mice are less dangerous than rats but still contaminate feed and can cause damage. The same prevention principles apply — secure feed, remove harbourage.
Wild birds (sparrows, starlings, pigeons) steal significant quantities of poultry feed if given access. Covered feeders, treadle feeders, and enclosed feeding areas all reduce wild bird feeding.
Coop Cleaning and Disinfection
A clean coop is a healthy coop. Disease organisms, parasites, and ammonia all accumulate in soiled housing.
Daily. Scrape the droppings board (if fitted). Check and refill water. Check nesting boxes for broken or soiled eggs. Quick visual check of the flock for obvious health issues.
Weekly. Remove and replace bedding (or turn the top layer if using the deep litter method). Clean feeders and drinkers. Check for red mite (see below).

Daily observation is your most important health tool. Know what healthy looks like — bright eyes, alert posture, active foraging, smooth feathers, clean vent, regular eating and drinking. Any deviation from normal warrants closer attention.
Common signs of illness. Lethargy or hunched posture. Reduced appetite or water intake. Pale or discoloured comb and wattles. Discharge from eyes or nostrils. Sneezing or laboured breathing. Diarrhoea or abnormal droppings. Feather loss (outside normal moult). Limping or reluctance to move. Sudden drop in egg production.

Red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) is the most common and most frustrating external parasite in poultry keeping. These tiny mites live in cracks and crevices in the coop (not on the birds) during the day, emerging at night to feed on the blood of roosting chickens. A severe infestation can cause anaemia, stress, reduced egg production, and — in extreme cases — death.
Detection. Check coop joints, roost ends, nesting box corners, and beneath roofing materials (particularly felt) for clusters of tiny grey or red mites. Run a white cloth along crevices — red smears indicate crushed, blood-filled mites. Check the underside of roosting bars.
Treatment. Specialist poultry mite treatments (sprays, powders, and paints) applied to the coop structure (not the birds — the mites live in the coop, not on the birds). Diatomaceous earth (food-grade) applied to crevices provides a physical barrier. Thorough cleaning and treatment of all coop surfaces during seasonal cleanouts.

Management. Rotational grazing reduces reinfection by moving birds away from contaminated ground. Some keepers worm routinely twice yearly; others worm based on faecal egg counts (a vet can test droppings to determine worm burden before treatment). Planning and tenancy. Check local planning regulations and any tenancy or lease restrictions before acquiring poultry. Some residential areas restrict livestock keeping.
Egg sales. If you sell eggs (beyond informal sales to neighbours), regulations may apply regarding labelling, traceability, and registration. Requirements vary by jurisdiction.
Common Mistakes New Smallholders Make
Underestimating the daily commitment. Chickens need attention every day — feeding, watering, egg collecting, health checking, and coop securing. There are no days off unless you have automated equipment and a reliable deputy.
Not securing feed against rats. Rats find poultry feed quickly and establish rapidly. Seal all feed in metal containers and use vermin-resistant feeders.
Ignoring red mite until infestation is severe. By the time you see mites on the birds, the infestation is already significant. Regular coop inspections catch problems early.
No plan for predators. If you keep chickens, a fox will eventually find them. Plan your predator defence (coop security, electric fencing, automatic doors) before the first loss, not after.
Too many birds too soon. Start small — four to six hens is manageable for a beginner. Learn the routines and rhythms before scaling up. Experience gained with a small flock makes a larger flock straightforward.
